an unusual but not unusual weekend

I have two gigs this weekend. That fact shouldn’t come as a surprise to you, but where they are might be a surprise.

I’m playing in Yakima. For the first time since 1995, and for the first time as a true professional musician. I have to admit that it’ll be a little surreal for me.

I’ll be playing with Chad Bault, who moved to Portland from Yakima about five years ago, but recently moved back. It’s the perfect situation to go back to Yakima for; to play with a bunch of good friends, to see my Mom-N-Stepdad, and then to be able to come back home at the end of it all.

Crystin Byrd update

And now, finally, a little good news I felt I should share.

The song of Crystin Byrd’s that she and I are working on for the movie soundtrack is coming along amazingly well. I was going for an Elliott Smith kind of sound, like from “XO” or “Figure Eight.” Full band, dark and intense, with really low electric bass, drum set played with brushes, and hooky, sparse keyboards and electric guitars interspersed throughout.

The drums, bass, acoustic guitars, electric guitars, (including some weird guitar effects) and mellotron keyboards are done. We still need to do the real vocal track, the cello tracks, and maybe some piano or glockenspiel for a solo section. We’re trying to finish it by this weekend. The filmmaker has a deadline for an important screening, and far be it from us to make him miss an opportunity.

And speaking of opportunities, this song has been just what I needed to boost my sagging musical confidence. I can’t wait to hear it in the theater, and I can’t wait to be able to share it with you.

broken heart

I got my heart broken tonight, by a song.

I’d be a hugely unprofessional a-hole if I went into any more detail about it, but make no mistake; my heart is broken.

What a month this has been.

Not a day has gone by that I haven’t thought, ‘Man, I need a new entry for my blog,’ but every time I sit down to start one, nothing comes.

I’ve been busy, so it’s not that.

I had an awesome gig in Salem with Breanna last Friday, then came home to a rockin’ Latin-American-themed house party at my building. Total blast.

Saturday morning, S&W and I went exploring in the hills of Southwest Portland to find as many of the old steps as we could. In the early 1900’s, the same group of people who built the Park Blocks thought it would be nice to have walking trails that linked the Park with the various neighborhoods. Many of them still exist, and they run through the most beautiful old parts of town. We traipsed around for about four or five hours. In fact, we even drove to Powell’s to find a book and look at a map, which we found and looked at, then drove back to a different set of steps. Total blast.

Sunday was house-cleaning day. I did six loads of laundry, washed the dishes, swept the sidewalk and steps outside, and took out the trash and recycling.

I realize this is all very well, but it doesn’t exactly make for an exciting blog entry. Oh well, I guess they all can’t be exciting.

Regardless, I’ve been too busy and too tired lately to be really creative. I’m also still really emotional about the Kelly situation. It’s been tough, especially since Luke is here with Alyssa now. I was very excited to have the four of us hang out once Luke arrived, and now he’s here–which is great, by the way–but at the same time, I feel like there’s a Kelly-shaped hole in the universe. Le Sigh.

I do have a Susie Blue gig tonight, so that will help lift me out of my funk. Nothing like playing great music with great friends to make you feel like yourself again. I’ll be better, and be back on my blogging game, soon enough.

When in doubt, there are always plenty more Yakima stories.

lots of news

This week’s been crazy.

Tuesday was the saddest I’ve been in a long time.

Wednesday, my friend Lauren and I got together to play music. She plays piano, and I took my cello over to her place, and we somehow thought it would be funny to play weird heavy metal songs. We started with “Holy Diver” by Dio, and that naturally led to things like “Crazy Train”, “Smoke On The Water”, and “Spoonman.” Hilarious.

Thursday was the second tango band rehearsal that Susan, Justin and I had. The first time we played together, it felt really good but sounded horrendous. (Well…? It did. :D) This time, it felt good, and we started to figure out how to interact musically, and what types of combinations of instruments work the best. Not only is tango the most difficult type of dancing (or so I’ve heard; I really want to learn), but it’s also quite possibly the most difficult style of music as well. You have to be able to read music as well as a classical player does, but you also have to be loose and be able to improvise as well as a jazz player does. These two skills don’t often co-exist, and they’re completely separate abilities. So it’s very demanding music. But, oh, so worth it when it all comes together. We’re all super excited, and we’re on the lookout for a pianist.

Friday after work, I crashed for a bit, then went to Susie Blue’s for a really nice dinner. It was a smaller group than usual, which I actually prefer, because I tend to get overwhelmed and anxious in large groups, especially when everyone else knows each other really well. I feel like an unnecessary element or something. But anyway. . .that didn’t happen last night. :) It was really a nice evening, and the food was stellar. I actually had two little pieces of steak, which I haven’t had for years. (Some proto-/ovo-/lacto-/pesca-/vegetarian I’ve turned out to be!) After being veggie for years, fish found its way back into my diet, and the occasional chicken. But aside from the twice-a-year craving for crappy pepperoni pizza, I almost never have red meat. The only times I do have it are times like last night, when it’s extremely well-prepared by my friends, and even then I can only handle it in small amounts. But it was really nice.

After that, I went over to meet John Jones (for the first time in months!) at the lounge in the basement of Jarra’s Ethiopian restaurant to see the band the Minders play. It was a pretty good show, but truth be told, I enjoyed talking to John more than I was interested in the show. We were surprised by Alan Kanning, a songwriter friend who, since the birth of his baby, almost never performs or gets out anymore. But he and his friend Hunter were there to watch the show, and it was really great to see them. Last time I bumped into him was October.

I need a change of scenery today, so as soon as Alyssa’s free, we’re heading to the beach. We’ve both had a pretty rough week, so we’re going to do a ‘get away’, then come back and have a French-themed dinner and movie night. She’s moving in July (!), so we’re trying to do all the little things we’ve been talking about before she leaves. I’m going to be a sad little Todd when she’s gone. We’ve really been there for each other, in a tremendous way, for the last two years. Somehow we bypassed the whole romantic ‘thing’, and just became really great friends. Portland’s not gonna be the same without her.

Sunday, Saussha and I are planning to meet and do something; still not sure what or where. We’ll figure it out, though, and much fun will be had.
